Lords Committee on Financial Exclusion to hear from Brighthouse and Consumer Finance Association

The House of Lords Committee on Financial Exclusion will next week take evidence from BrightHouse, the Consumer Finance Association, the Consumer Credit Association and others as it continues its inquiry.

The Committee will take evidence across two sessions from 10:40am on Tuesday 1 November in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords. The full details are:

10:40am

  • Ms Sue Lewis, Chair, Financial Services Consumer Panel
  • Mr Damon Gibbons, Director, Centre for Responsible Credit

11:40am

  • Mr Russell Hamblin-Boone, Chief Executive, Consumer Finance Association
  • Mr Hamish Paton, Chief Executive, Bright House
  • Mr David Rees, Chairman, Law Committee, Consumer Credit Association

In the first session areas of questioning will include how the nature of problem debt has changed over recent years, whether financial services companies have a duty of care to their customers and how that can be applied if so, and how effective credit unions and other alternative lenders have been in providing services to financially excluded people.

In the second session the Committee will ask the witnesses about the effect of new regulations which have introduced a cap on high cost short term credit, why some credit providers are clearer about their interest rates and terms and conditions than others and how lenders ensure that vulnerable customers can afford their repayments.
