Public transport inquiry: what can English urban areas learn from the transport systems of other European cities?
Monday 4 April 2022
On Tuesday 5 April 2022, the Lords Built Environment Committee will take evidence on the public transport systems of the Austrian capital Vienna and the French city of Valenciennes.
This evidence session will be streamed on Parliament TV. It is part of the committee’s inquiry on public transport in towns and cities.
At 10am, the Committee will hear from:
- Dr Erich Forster, former Chief Executive Officer, WESTbahn Management GmbH and Rail Holding AG, and Chair, AllRail
- Pauline Cassette, Transport and Mobility Director, Simouv.
Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:
- What public transport innovation has worked well in Vienna and Valenciennes? What has worked less well than expected?
- What impact has the Valenciennes tram network had on car usage and other transport modes in the region?
- Is Vienna’s €365 annual multi-modal travel card cost-effective for the transport authorities? Has it led to more people using public transport?
- How has using data helped transport authorities in Vienna and Valenciennes to meet public transport demand?
- What can be done to improve connectivity across public transport modes?
- Has the governance structure in Vienna and Valenciennes helped the delivery of more effective public transport services?
