Retail, hospitality and tech experts give evidence to social mobility inquiry

The House of Lords Social Mobility Policy Committee continues its inquiry on Thursday 3 April by hearing from employers from the hospitality, retail and tech sectors.

The session begins at 10.05am in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster and can be followed live or afterwards on Parliament TV.

Giving evidence will be: 

  • Paul Gerrard, Campaigns, Public Affairs & Board Secretariat Director, the Co-op;
  • Chris Welham, Licensed Trade Charity, formerly in brewing industry;
  • David Houghton, Founder, Tech Futures.

Members are expected to ask questions on:

  • the roles of employers in relation to social mobility; 
  • social mobility recruitment strategies;
  • apprenticeships;
  • staff development programmes;
  • measuring and evaluating the impact of social mobility initiatives;
  • engaging with young people not in education, employment or training;
  • local partnerships;
  • removing barriers to social mobility. 

The Committee’s call for evidence for the inquiry is open until Monday, 28 April and can be found on the Committee’s website.
