Should population ageing be seen as a positive or negative development?

Tuesday 22 April 2025

At 3pm today, the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee, as part of its inquiry on the impact of ageing on the UK economy, will be taking evidence from:

  • Prof. Charles Goodhart, Emeritus Professor of Banking and Finance, London School of Economics
  • Prof. Andrew J. Scott, Professor of Economics, London Business School.

This evidence session, which is open to the public, will be held in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords. It will also be streamed live and on demand on Parliament TV.

Topics the committee is likely to cover in this session include:

  • Whether an ageing society can be expected to save more for retirement or draw on existing savings to a greater extent.
  • Policy reforms that would encourage younger people to be better prepared for their retirements.
  • Distributional trade-offs involved in an ageing society.
  • What can be learnt from other countries – such as Japan – and their ageing populations.
  • What the Government can do to improve the productivity of older people.
  • Policies the Government should be pursuing to reflect a future ageing society.
