Supreme Court former president to give evidence on the rule of law

Tomorrow the House of Lords Constitution Committee will continue its inquiry into the rule of law by questioning:
- Baroness Hale of Richmond, President of the Supreme Court 2017 - 2020
- Lord Sumption, Justice of the Supreme Court between 2012 – 2018
Both witnesses have had extensive legal careers beyond the Supreme Court.
Topics the committee is likely to cover include:
- The importance of the rule of law in a functioning democracy
- The state of the rule of law in the UK
- The role of the judiciary in upholding the rule of law
- The relationship between the rule of law and parliamentary sovereignty
- Whether charges of ‘judicial activism’ against UK judges are founded
- Whether there is sufficient understanding within Government and Parliament about what upholding the rule of law requires.
The session will take place at 10.30am on Wednesday 2 April 2025 and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
