Supreme Court former president to give evidence on the rule of law

Tuesday 01 April 2025

Tomorrow the House of Lords Constitution Committee will continue its inquiry into the rule of law by questioning: 

  • Baroness Hale of Richmond, President of the Supreme Court 2017 - 2020 
  • Lord Sumption, Justice of the Supreme Court between 2012 – 2018 
    Both witnesses have had extensive legal careers beyond the Supreme Court.

Topics the committee is likely to cover include:

  • The importance of the rule of law in a functioning democracy 
  • The state of the rule of law in the UK 
  • The role of the judiciary in upholding the rule of law 
  • The relationship between the rule of law and parliamentary sovereignty  
  • Whether charges of ‘judicial activism’ against UK judges are founded 
  • Whether there is sufficient understanding within Government and Parliament about what upholding the rule of law requires. 

The session will take place at 10.30am on Wednesday 2 April 2025 and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
