Which economic challenges are driven by an ageing society and which are driven by a falling fertility rate

At 3pm on Tuesday 29 April, the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee, as part of its inquiry on the impact of ageing on the UK economy, will be taking evidence from:

  • Catherine Foot, Director, Phoenix Group
  • Dr Jonathan Cribb, Associate Director and Head of Retirement, Savings, and Ageing, Institute for Fiscal Studies.

This evidence session, which is open to the public, will be held in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords. It will also be streamed live and on demand on Parliament TV.

Topics the committee is likely to cover in this session include:

  • The main economic challenges of an ageing society.
  • The importance of pensions and health care.
  • Factors that shape incentives to stay in the workforce.
  • Ways the pension system – both public and private – may need to change to accommodate an ageing society.
  • Intergenerational aspects of an ageing society with respect to wealth transfer (i.e. inheritance).
  • The relationship between productivity and age.
  • Whether the Government is taking the correct approach with the benefits system to mitigate the impact of an ageing society.
