Lords committee hears about the public health impacts of nitrogen

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee continues its inquiry into the efficient use and management of reactive nitrogen by hearing about the public health impacts of nitrogen in food and water and air pollution.

The session will start at 10am in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster and can be followed live or afterwards on Parliament TV.

Giving evidence at 10am on nitrate in food and water will be:

  • Professor Catherine Bondonno, Associate Professor, Edith Cowan University;
  • Professor Gunter Kuhnle, Professor of Nutritional Epidemiology, University of Reading.

Members are expected to ask questions on:

  • the role of nitrite and nitrate in the body;
  • naturally occurring nitrate versus nitrite additives;
  • alternatives to nitrate/nitrite additives;
  • nitrate in water.

Giving evidence at 11am on air pollution will be:

  • Professor Anna Hansell, Professor in Environmental Epidemiology, University of Leicester;
  • Professor Alastair Lewis, Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry, University of York.

Members are expected to ask questions on:

  • sources and impacts of outdoor air pollution;
  • vulnerable groups;
  • geographic variation;
  • indoor air pollution;
  • current policy approaches.
