Autistic people to give evidence about their experiences to Lords committee

On Monday 17 March the House of Lords Autism Act 2009 Committee will be hearing evidence from a panel of autistic people about their experiences, as part of its inquiry into the Act. The Committee will hear from autistic people who advocate for and support others about key issues for the inquiry from their perspective, with a focus on public understanding and acceptance of autism. 

Giving evidence at 15:05 will be: 

  • Leo Capella, Training Consultant (Employment Specialist), National Autistic Society  
  • Zaynab Sohawon, Young Ambassador at National Autistic Society  
  • Marsha Martin, Founder and CEO, Black SEN Mamas  

The session will cover the following topics: 

  • The main problems for autistic people today, as well as what is going well  
  • The amount of public acceptance and understanding of autistic people and what can be done to improve this 
  • How good providers of public services, businesses and other organisations are at being inclusive and accessible for autistic people 
  • How effectively autistic people are identified and offered support 
  • How effectively autistic people and the people who support them are included in decisions that affect them 
  • What the Government can do to improve the lives of autistic people and the people who support them.
