Can the UK learn from other countries on media literacy? Lords Committee takes evidence from international witnesses
Friday 28 March 2025
The House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee will next week take evidence from experts from Canada, Finland, the Republic of Ireland and Belgium (Flanders) as it examines international approaches to media literacy.
The evidence will be heard across two sessions starting at 2:30pm on Tuesday 1 April in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.
Giving evidence to the Committee will be:
2:30pm
- Leo Pekkala, Deputy Director, National Audiovisual Institute of Finland
- Andy Demeulenaere, General Co-ordinator, Mediawijs (Flanders)
3:15pm
- Martina Chapman, National Co-ordinator, Media Literacy Ireland
- Matthew Johnson, Director of Education, MediaSmarts (Canada)
Both sessions will cover key issues for the inquiry including how media literacy work can be coordinated effectively across different organisations; the benefits and challenges of having a single national policy in this area; the role of formal education in improving media literacy; and how barriers to the delivery of media literacy work can be addressed.
