Committee hears from British Chambers of Commerce and trade associations as working from home inquiry continues

The House of Lords Home-based Working Committee will hear from the British Chambers of Commerce and trade associations on Monday 24 March.

The evidence session will consider business perspectives relating to remote and hybrid working including effective management techniques, adaptability of working patterns based on size of workforce and operational sector and balancing employer and worker needs.

The session will start at 2.15pm and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster.

The following witnesses will give evidence:

2.15pm

  • Jane Gratton, Deputy Director, Public Policy, British Chambers of Commerce; and
  • Alex Hall-Chen, Principal Policy Advisor, Sustainability, Skills, and Employment, Institute of Directors.

3.15pm

  • Brad Taylor, Director of Consulting, Advanced Workplace Associates;
  • Charlie Steel, Chief Financial Officer, International Workplace Group; and
  • Cathryn Moses-Stone, Head of Policy & Impact, Chartered Management Institute.

Questions will include:

  • How can employers adapt their approach to remote and hybrid working based on their size and the sector in which they operate?

  • What challenges and opportunities do remote and hybrid working present to employers concerning recruitment and retention? Should home and hybrid working options be included more often in job advertisements?

  • What management techniques can employers use to make remote and hybrid working effective, and to what extent should these focus on employee outputs?

  • What are the benefits and risks of hybrid working for individuals, including women, and how do these differ compared to fully remote working?

  • How can leaders and managers be upskilled to address issues posed by remote and hybrid working, including collaboration, creativity, and worker attitudes and expectations?

  • How can employer and worker needs be balanced within the context of remote and hybrid working, for example concerning the days of the week on which people work on-site or whether they are financially compensated for attendance?
