How does the productivity of workers change as they get older?

At 3pm on Tuesday 1 April 2025, the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee, as part of its inquiry on the impact of ageing on the UK economy, will be taking evidence from:

  • Dr Ben Brindle, Researcher, Migration Observatory
  • Mary Gregory, Director of Population Statistics, ONS.

This evidence session, which is open to the public, will be held in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords. It will also be streamed live and on demand on Parliament TV.

Topics the committee is likely to cover in this session include:

  • Current demographic trends with respect to ageing.
  • Past and present trends in the UK’s fertility rate.
  • Rates of immigration required to keep the current population age structure unchanged.
  • The effects different immigration regimes have on the age and economic activity profile of immigrants.
  • Recent trends in economic activity among the over fifties.
  • The prevalence of informal care in the UK.
