Legal academics to be quizzed on the rule of law

Tomorrow the House of Lords Constitution Committee will be hearing from legal academics as part of its first evidence session for its new inquiry into the rule of law.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Dr Jan van Zyl Smit, Director of the Bingham Institute for the Rule of Law 
  • Professor Jeff King, Professor of Law at University College London 
  • Professor Adam Tomkins, John Millar Professor of Public Law at the University of Glasgow. 

Topics the committee is likely cover include:

  • The definition of the rule of law and where there is disagreement about its meaning 
  • The importance of the rule of law in a functioning democracy 
  • Whether there is conflict between the rule of Law and parliamentary sovereignty  
  • What the operation of the rule of law looks like in practice  
  • Whether the rule of law is under threat in the UK 
  • Who is responsible for upholding the rule of law in the UK.  

The session will take place at 10.30am on Wednesday 26 March 2025 and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
