Lords committee hears from journalists and academics on the transatlantic relationship
Monday 17 March 2025
On Wednesday 19 March the House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee will continue its inquiry into the future UK-US relationship by hearing from diplomatic and foreign affairs journalists and academics specialising in international politics and political science.
The session will explore the transatlantic relationship from the perspective of both witness panels.
The session will start at 10.30am and will be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV or attend in person in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster.
Giving evidence will be:
10.30am
- Anton La Guardia, Diplomatic Editor, The Economist;
- Gerard Baker, Editor-at-Large, Wall Street Journal; and
- Edward Luce, US National Editor, Financial Times.
11.30am
- Professor Don Abelson, Professor of Political Science at McMaster University; and
- Professor Monica Toft, Professor of International Politics at Tufts University.
Questions will include:
- Do you detect a generational divide in American attitudes toward the UK? If so, what is driving this and should the UK be putting more effort into promoting the UK to young Americans?
- To what extent are the “culture wars” and US domestic polarisation a threat to the UK-US relationship?
- Would you agree with the characterisation that the UK is in an “abusive relationship” with the US? How should the UK respond to a US that may be becoming less predictable and less reliable?
- What role does friendship play between leaders in bilateral relations, notably between the US and the UK? How important is this?
- To what extent do you think the Trump Administration’s slogan of “America First” means “America Alone”?
- How do you assess the state of US-UK relations when compared to the US’ relationship with the rest of Europe? And what does this mean for the UK? Do you expect any challenges to the UK-US relationship resulting from the UK Government seeking a reset in UK-EU relations?
