Prisons Minister to appear before Lords Committee

Monday 31 March 2025

Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will be questioning Lord Timpson OBE, Minister of State for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending, as it continues its inquiry into Prison Culture.

Also giving evidence alongside the minister from 10:30am will be:

  • Phil Copple, Director General of Operations, HMPPS

Questions the committee is likely to ask include:

  • How does the Government define the core purpose of prisons?
  • How effectively does the Ministry of Justice oversee the performance of prison governors?
  • What is the Government doing to address staff retention issues, particularly among frontline prison staff?
  • How effective is the current recruitment process in attracting and selecting suitable prison staff?
  • What progress has been made on improving prison staff training?
  • What lessons have been learned from well-performing prisons, and how is best practice being shared across the system?
  • What factors have influenced the provision of meaningful activity for prisoners?

The session will take place on Tuesday 1 April March 2025 and can be followed live on Parliament TV.
