UK law enforcement organisations speak to Lords Committee as part of its inquiry into UK-EU reset
Monday 25 March 2025
The Lords European Affairs Committee continues its inquiry into the UK-EU reset, hearing from senior officials from the National Police Chiefs’ Council, National Crime Agency, and Crown Prosecution Service on UK-EU law enforcement and judicial cooperation on criminal matters.
The session will take place from 4pm on Tuesday 11 March in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster, and can be watched live, or later, on Parliament Live TV.
Questions are likely to focus on the way in which current UK-EU arrangements in this area are working, under the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement; the extent to which improvements are needed; and, on this basis, what the Government is - and should be - seeking as part of the reset.
At 4pm, the Committee will take evidence from:
- Robert Jones CBE, Director General (Operations), National Crime Agency
- Deputy Chief Constable Peter Ayling, International Criminality and EU Exit Lead, National Police Chiefs' Council
- Joanne Jakymec, Chief Crown Prosecutor, International, London and South-East Division, Crown Prosecution Service
Members are expected to ask questions on:
- The way in which EU Member States engage with cooperation with the UK in this area
- The ‘workarounds’ being used by UK law enforcement following the UK’s loss of access to the EU’s real-time SIS II data system
- The effectiveness of current UK-EU extradition and surrender arrangements for criminals and suspects, and the impact of their more limited nature compared to the European Arrest Warrant (EAW)
- UK cooperation with the EU’s Europol and Eurojust
- The value to UK law enforcement of the UK retaining EU data adequacy status, after its current expiry date in June
