Are tech firms doing enough to support their users to develop media literacy skills? Lords to quiz Google, TikTok and Roblox

Friday 2 May 2025

The House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee will next week take evidence from Google, TikTok and Roblox as it investigates the role of tech platforms in supporting users to improve their media literacy and stay safe online.

The inquiry is considering the key actions required to enhance media literacy skills across the UK, to enable citizens to engage with the digital world safely and responsibly.

The Committee will hear evidence from 2:30pm on Tuesday 6 May in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords. Giving evidence to the Committee will be:

  • Zoe Darmé, Director of Trust Strategy, Google Search
  • Ben Bradley, Senior Government Relations and Public Policy Manager, TikTok
  • Laura Higgins, Senior Director of Community Safety and Civility, Roblox

The session will cover a range of issues including whether tech platforms are doing enough to support media literacy and protect their users. This will include exploring the resources and support the platforms provide for both children and adults.

The Committee will also ask the witnesses about how media literacy is embedded in their platform’s design, when and how they collaborate with organisations promoting media literacy and how they assess the effectiveness of their work in this area.
