Committee looks at the effect of remote and hybrid working on transport, cities and regions

The House of Lords Home-based Working Committee will hold an evidence session on Thursday 8 May in which it will look at how remote and hybrid working have affected transport, cities, different regions and other external factors.
The session will start at 10.15am and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster.
The following witnesses will give evidence:

- Paul Swinney, Director of Policy and Research, Centre for Cities;
- Christina Calderato, Director of Strategy, Transport for London; and
- Daniel Vaughan, Chief Network Officer, Transport for Greater Manchester.
11.20am
- David Harding, Head of Analysis and Economics, Network Rail; and
- Mark Pragnell, Managing Director, Pragmatix Advisory.
Questions will include:
- What are benefits and drawbacks of remote, hybrid and in-person work for city economies and what lessons that can be drawn from other countries on this subject?
- How does transport usage in UK cities now compare to pre-pandemic levels, including relating to timing and method of travel, and how far is this attributable to working patterns?
- How do remote and hybrid working affect rural areas compared to non-rural areas, and what is the role of digital and transport connectivity within this?
- How have remote and hybrid working affected the residential choices of people living in cities and what are the implications for housing and transport infrastructure?
- What are your findings on the productivity impact of remote and hybrid working, and how does this relate to wider economic growth and international competitiveness?
