Trade experts speak to Lords Committee on the future UK-US economic relationship
Friday 2 May 2025
On Wednesday 7 May the House of Lords International Relations and Defence Committee will hear evidence from trade experts in an evidence session that will examine the UK-US economic relationship. The session will consider topics including the implications of US tariffs on the UK, trends in US trade policy and prospects for a UK-US free trade agreement.
The session will start at 11.30am and will be available to watch live or on demand at Parliament TV or attend in person in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster.
Giving evidence will be:
11.30am
- Sam Lowe, Partner, Trade and Market Access, Flint Global; and
- L. Daniel Mullaney, former US trade negotiator and Non-resident Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council.
Questions will include:
- In your view, what are the key trends in US trade policy that are likely to persist irrespective of changes in the US Administration?
- How are Trump's trade policies affecting the world trading system and global trade more broadly, and what may be their long-term effect? How should the UK respond?
- Which sectors within the UK economy—and parts of the UK—are most vulnerable to the current US 10% baseline tariff regime?
- How may tariffs impact Northern Ireland, given its special status under the Windsor Framework?
- Is a UK-US FTA desirable, and how do you assess the chances of one being negotiated? What are likely to be the key obstacles?
- To what extent might the UK’s ‘reset’ with the EU impact the UK’s ability to negotiate a bilateral trade deal with the US? Will the UK need to make a choice between the EU and the US?
