What are the main challenges facing the over-50s when it comes to employment opportunities?

At 3pm on Tuesday 6 May, the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee, as part of its inquiry on the impact of ageing on the UK economy, will be taking evidence from:
- Dr Emily Andrews, Deputy Director for Work, Centre for Ageing Better
- Naomi Clayton, CEO, Institute for Employment Studies.
This evidence session, which is open to the public, will be held in Committee Room 4 of the House of Lords. It will also be streamed live and on demand on Parliament TV .
Topics the committee is likely to cover in this session include:
- Current trends in employment for the over-50s.
- Primary motivations behind people’s choices when it comes to working into their 50s and 60s and when they choose to retire.
- Fears over the automation of many jobs and the challenges posed by digital know-how.
- Prevalence of ageism in the labour market.
- Training and other programmes to promote the return to work among the 50+ age cohort.
