What is the role of news organisations in improving media literacy? Lords Committee investigates

Friday 9 May 2025

The House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee will next week take evidence from The Guardian Foundation, the Public Interest News Foundation and Liverpool John Moores University’s Head of Journalism in a session focused on the role of news organisations in promoting media literacy.

The Committee’s inquiry is considering the key actions required to enhance media literacy skills across the UK, to enable citizens to engage with the digital world safely and responsibly.

The Committee will hear evidence from 2:30pm on Tuesday 13 May in Committee Room 4A of the House of Lords. Giving evidence to the Committee will be:

  • Frances Yeoman, Head of Journalism, Liverpool John Moores University
  • Elli Narewska, Head of News and Media Literacy, The Guardian Foundation
  • Jonathan Heawood, Executive Director, Public Interest News Foundation

During the session, the Committee will quiz the witnesses on the role of the news industry in supporting media literacy, and explore how practical and ethical challenges impact the industry’s ability to deliver media literacy initiatives. The Committee will also ask the witnesses for their views on the work of the Government and Ofcom in improving media literacy.
